The name Ranunculus is Late Latin for ” little frog”, possibly referring to the many species found near water. It is also known as ‘butter cut or “Coyote’s eyes”, based on a legend where the Coyote was tossing his eyes in the air and catching them when they were snatched by Eagle. Unable to see, Coyote made eyes from the buttercup.
